Esquivando las Miradas: The Dystopia of Juantopia at Gaslight Gallery (12-4pm)
Juan Santos was born in the Bronx, New York City, and later lived in inner city Boston. Santos earned his MFA in Visual Art at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, and now teaches art at Boston Day and Evening Academy, an alternative high school in Boston. His students often live in dystopian worlds of their own. Using the visual language of cartoons and the street language of graffiti, Santos is able to relate to his students about contemporary fears and trauma. He uses the language of comics and the recurring image of a cartoonish bird to address the difficult themes so many young people are facing.
Plates and Platters at Potters’ Guild of Frederick (12-4pm)
At the Potters’ Guild of Frederick our ceramic artists have made their marks on the canvas of the earth. Horizontal items are the canvases we’ve created and decorated for functional use and beautiful tableware.
A wide variety of decoration techniques on plates, platters and trays is coming your way this summer in our gallery at 14S. Market Street in Frederick, MD. And we are giving out ice cream cone magnets in celebration of our Brain Freeze event coming in August!
