Faces of the Wounded Walking Tour @ National Museum of Civil War Medicine

September Events

National Museum of Civil War Medicine Director of Education John Lustrea will lead a special historic walking tour through Downtown Frederick on Sept. 3 at 2:00 PM. John will be highlighting individual stories from several of Frederick’s Civil War hospitals. Tickets are $15 and include admission to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in addition to the walking tour. Tickets are free for Museum members, but you must still reserve your spot. Reservations will be accepted on a first come first served basis. Buy your ticket today.

Doug Moulden spends a good bit of his time trying to find an image. It’s not so much what he paints, but more how he paints it. Painting for him is not an attempt to document the world as it appears but an opportunity to recreate the world. “I’m not a reporter, I’m a poet.” Doug prefers landscapes that have no human figures in them. The 12 monotypes in Rhonda Smith’s show, Portraits of Persistence, honor the students of Storer College. The linoleum-printed images are not photographic but do strive for individual likenesses. Wallpaper and hand-cut backgrounds add additional texture and color. After the Civil War, the college in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia welcomed students of all races and genders. Former enslaved people and their sons and daughters of found a welcoming environment on the hills overlooking the Shenandoah River.
