For the month of May, a special time in which we celebrate Mother’s Day, the mother-daughter duo of Arden Jepsen McElroy and Jill Hossler have teamed up to be our featured artists. Jill began painting approximately 40 years ago and has worked in watercolor and oils but her chosen mediums are acrylic or gouache. Arden began painting with acrylics 10 years ago, after retiring from a 39-year teaching career. This Saturday, May 7th starting at 1 pm (weather permitting) Aleventures will be in the parking lot leading you back to your days of fun on the playground. 4 Square, Hopscotch and other fun pastimes will be taking place. You can fuel up on coffee, snacks and adult beverages for those of age. Keep an eye out on the weather as we will be moving indoors and playing board games if it’s raining.

Well known Frederick photographer Harriet Wise celebrates three-quarters of a century recording life through her photography. “Rediscovering Harriet,” is a collection of her favorite photos, the earliest from 1949, the latest taken recently. First Saturday opening reception 3-7pm. Exhibition runs May 6-29. Gallery hours, Friday and Saturday 12-8 and Sundays 12-4.

A Community Interactive Art Exhibition The newest art exhibition coming to Gallery 115 at the Y Arts Center in Downtown Frederick will run from May 14 through August 15, 2022. The exhibition concept comes from Frederick-based artist, curator, and writer Rula Jones. Graffiti derives from the Italian word graffiato which means “scratched”. This class will focus on creating mixed media creations utilizing concepts of color blocking, effective use of text and graphics alongside the random ephemera of life. Composition will be created using quick selection of bits and bobbles provided by instructor. Demonstration of asymmetrical color blocking and effective use of graphics.
